Encounter Mahi successfully prepares youth aged 16-20 years old, who struggle with academics, for employment through supporting them in furthering training, leadership development, strengths coaching, gaining the right qualifications, CV creation, driver licensing, work experience and employment opportunities to transition them into a suitable workplace.
Our vision is for our marginalised rangatahi to encounter their true potential as the all become a contributing part of their community and society. Encounter Mahi is a vital part of the Arotika ki te Kaupapa track in developing an optimistic outlook and hope filled future into their lives. Supporting youth as they learn to be resilient and push through the challenges and bounce back when facing difficult situations in an adult world.
Encounter Mahi focuses on;
- Enabling young people to thrive in their community through building connections for future opportunities.
- Transitioning our young people into adulthood through empowering them with the necessary skills for the workplace
- Valuing the mahi young people do and educating them about the impacts that this has on the community and wider society
“I have seen first hand and continue to see teenagers on a journey to becoming responsible leaders from what would otherwise have been a journey towards criminal offending and self-harm. I have also seen plenty of ‘good kids’ benefit from Mary’s training. They grow in confidence, make friends, learn motor cross skills and learn leadership skills which stands them in good stead to be leaders in their communities.” - Duncan Jeffery (Senior Constable – Tauranga Police)
