Story of Transformation: Liam's Story

Liam is a 10 year old who wanted, even if he could not always express it, to feel good about himself, to feel safe, and to be understood. He had a need for connection, someone he could trust, and a space where he could just be himself without feeling the need to protect or prove anything.

At times, prior to his engagement with Youth Encounter, Liam found it difficult to manage his emotions, especially when feeling overwhelmed, insecure, or challenged. When these feelings came up, he would often put up a tough exterior, using anger or behaviour to protect himself. This made it harder for him to connect positively with others and to feel confident.

The barriers Liam faced were not a lack of potential, but rather a lack of safe spaces and consistent support where he could learn how to regulate his emotions and build his self worth. Without this, he was at risk of continuing to rely on defensive behaviours instead of developing healthier ways of responding.

Youth Encounter created a safe, consistent, and accepting environment where he could begin to build trust. Through the 1 to 1 Activity Therapy programme, Liam was given a space that combined fun, challenge, and meaningful connection.

The programme provided a clear plan through weekly sessions that integrated dirt bike riding with therapeutic kōrero. This allowed Liam to engage in a way that felt natural and enjoyable, while also creating opportunities to build emotional awareness and self regulation skills.

As trust developed, Liam was supported and gently challenged to step outside of his comfort zone. He was encouraged to express himself, reflect on his emotions, and try new ways of responding. Importantly, he was given the opportunity to let his guard down and move away from the tough façade he often used to protect himself.

Instead, Liam experienced what it feels like to be safe, accepted, and able to simply be a kid.

Liam successfully completed the programme, attending all sessions and showing strong engagement throughout. Over time, there was a clear and noticeable shift in him.

As the weeks went on, Liam grew in confidence and became more comfortable in himself and in the environment. He began to let his guard down, allowing his playful, relaxed, and authentic personality to come through.

The result of this journey is a young boy who feels safer, more connected, and more confident in being himself. He has experienced what it is like to engage in something positive, challenging, and fun, within a supportive environment where he is valued.

Liam is now transitioning into mentoring, which will continue to build on the strong foundation created. This ongoing support will help him keep developing emotional regulation, confidence, and a strong sense of identity.

Liam's story is one of trust, connection, and growth. With the right people around him, he is beginning to step into the young person he is capable of becoming.
